Jimfish and I did Lakeville (Wononscopomuc) today. Surface temp was 63 at daybreak, warming eventuall to 65/66. There were a lot of fish on the beds, and a lot of fish that haven't spawned yet, as well as a fair number of empty beds, suggesting that at least some fish have finished spawning and gotten on with their lives. Got a pound an a half fish on a spinnerbait from the dock at the ramp, on my first cast of the day, before Jim even got the covers off his reeels. That was the only fish we got though for about 20 minutes, until we got out to one of our off-shore spots, and banged a couple on the drop shot. It was an off shore spot surrounded by deep water, but the fish seemed to be pretty much right on top of it in less than 12 feet of water.
Jim got in on the dropshot action on the same spot, but after just a few fish, it kind of died, and we went off in search of more bass.
We found a pretty fair number of them in reasonably shallow water (less than 6 or 7 feet, for the most part, but not on the bank.) I was getting most of mine on a drop shot, while Jimfish switched over to an Ozmo on a jighead. The dropshot lure of choice today was FindBass's DS Shad in Motor Oil/Green Flake.

Here is a first for me! A smallmouth from Lakeville!!! If you had asked me before today whether there were any smallies in Wononscopomuc, I would have said no. But as of today, I know for a fact that there's at least one.

Eventually, we got into a little flurry of action along the inside weedline on a flat point, and took 5 fish (all on Ozmos) in one fast drift across it.

We did have one negative impression of the lake today. The number of dead largemouth bass we saw floating or sitting on the bottom. These were adult fish, and there were a few other warm water species we saw dead, too. A pickerel, a perch and a couple sunnies. But just ton of LMB. Definitely something the DEP should be looking into, in my opinion.

On the good side of the ledger we ended the day with 31 LMB between us -- all decent fish except maybe one that was only about 1-1/4 pounds. Jum had 16 bass, and I had 15. We also each had a couple pickerel and a rainbow trout, along with a couple perch, a couple sunnies and more rock bass than you could shake a stick at.Plus, we got to watch a pair of bald eagles AND a pair of ospreys. All in all, a very enjoyable day on the water, with the exception of the concerns we have about the dead bass.
