The question is, why?

I know the big fish have come up the river, and it’s topwater time. But today’s bright sunshine didn’t help matters topwater-wise, and the fishing was overall slow. Couldn’t believe we were still (or is it again?) looking at 56 degree water temps.

Larry Johnson & I went to Hatch yesterday morning.

Beautiful conditions — cloudy, warm and calm.

Fishing sucked.

An hour-and-a-half.

Five bass between us.

If one of ‘em weighed a pound, I’d be surprised.

Headed for the trailer, and then for Lakeville. The fishing’s been too good there to waste more time here.

Jimfish & I returned to Lakeville today. Last weekend, we launched in 58 degree water, which cooled to 56 degree water and stayed there in the rain. Except that it was Rich Rotzal in my back seat instead of Larry Johnson, and it got a lot warmer a lot earlier, this morning seemed like a carbon copy of yesterday morning. We caught a load of schoolies on the ChandelieriouZ rig, but nothing outstanding, size wise.

I really wanted to catch ‘em on top today.

But the fish were having none of that topwater stuff. I tried, but never had so much as a swirl. I blame the bright sunshine. By the time we got some cloud cover, we also got some wind with it, and the topwater dreams went by the wayside.

All but 4 of the 75 or so fish I caught today came on the Chandelierious Rig(TM).

Last weekend’s 50 degree water temp had been down to 44 mid-week and appears to just be getting back above 46 by today. The reversal of the spring warming trend does not appear to have slowed down [...]
