My friend and occasional fishing partner, Mike O’Mara posted an interesting fishing report on the CTF website the other day. Mike’s a blues bassist and life long avid angler. Looks like he also has some skills as a writer, as I felt that he really conveyed the excitement of the event. I enjoyed his writeup so much, I asked him if I could republish his story here. And so, here it is.
I have no pictures, and i have no proof. I am left explaining this next story with only my good word, and my promise it is true. Only my friend Phil can vouch for my words.
Today I hooked the largest freshwater fish i have ever seen, let alone landed. View the entire post — A tale well told…

Haven’t been to Lakeville in a couple weeks, so my buddy Jim & I headed up to check out the mid-summer bite.
Bass fishing was about as expected. We got 26 between us on a variety of baits. My hot baits were the Ozmo and the Drop Shot. For Jim, it was the Jig & the Ozmo, although he got a few DS fish as well. View the entire post — A different start to August

This entry is just a rant, and has nothing to do with fishing, other than as fishermen, we tend to pay more attention to the weather forecasts than a lot of other folks. What’s with the “Futurecast! Tomorrow’s weather today!” promos that seem to be cropping up on most of the local news shows? Didn’t [...]

Well, to answer the title question, because the fishing’s good, even when it’s not.
We had planned to use my son’s boat this weekend, but he had starter issues, so at the last minute, I hooked mine up and dragged it up with me.

No room for anthropomorphism in fishing
When some “authority” whether it’s a seminar speaker, outdoor writer or TV fisherman, tells you that to solve whatever fishing problem he is discussing you must try to “Think like a fish,” the odds are almost certain that he is about to lead you down a dead end path. Turn to the next article in the magazine, put the book down or change the channel. Whatever you do, don’t take his advice at face value. You can’t “think like” a creature that doesn’t think. I had no intention of fishing Lakeville at all this weekend. I wanted to be at Champlain. I was supposed to be at Champlain. I really, really, was. But it didn’t happen, and now it looks like it won’t be until the end of the month. So I ended up at Lakeville again on Saturday.
Saturday, 7/11
Fishing was surprisingly tough. We managed to catch them OK, but it sure wasn’t easy. Then, in the afternoon, after the clouds rolled in, the sky clouded up, the wind started to crank and the barometer plummeted, the bite turned on — but just for a short time. From 2:45 until 4, View the entire post — Another Lakeville weekend.

There’s not a lot that makes me happier than going fishing. So I celebrated the 4th by fishing Friday and Saturday.
Saturday 7/3
Hit Tyler at daybreak. Expected an ‘over the weed tops’ bite. Didn’t get it. Ended up having to resort to a drop shot to scrape 2 little 12-1/2 inchers out of 16 to 18 feet of water. Well, I didn’t expect to spend all day at Tyler, but I didn’t expect to be on the trailer and pulling out of the lot, Lakeville bound, by 6:30 either. But here I was, doing exactly that. I took a solo trip to Lakeville on Saturday, which isn’t really a bad thing, because it allows me the freedom to do some things that I’d be uncomfortable doing with a partner in the boat. Like sit in one spot and make the same basic cast over and over for close to 3 hours.
Ah, but let me begin at the beginning. That’s why that call it beginning, after all. The first hour or so produced only a few fish on the lures I’d been doing so well at Lakeville with. But when I put down the bit-down-Ozmo and picked up the drop shot rod, everything changed. 5 fish in 6 casts on the trusty motor oil Springworm. View the entire post — Return to the drop shot zone

Backreeling puts YOU in control!
When you’re fighting a fish — especially with light line — the ‘experts’ tell you your drag should slip freely and smoothly, allowing the fish to take line as it wants.
Bullhockey!
Who does that leave in control? The fish? Hey… that’s a great idea. Let the fish control the outcome. Except I’ll bet he’d prefer a different outcome than you would. Wait… maybe it leaves control of the situation in the hands of the engineer who designed the drag. But I don’t know him, and I certainly don’t trust his judgment. He’s not on the water with me. He doesn’t see that log the fish is headed toward. Truth be known, he probably doesn’t give a flying hoot whether I ever land that fish or not.
I’ll tell you who I want in control of the situation… …Me. View the entire post — Drag? We don’t need no stinking drag!

Despite the fact that it’s 160 miles away, I consider Champlain my home lake, and put in as many hours there as possible evey season. Usually by mid-June, I’ve got 5 days or more on Champlain. This year, I finally got up there for my first trip on the weekend of the 13th. I was set to fish with my son, in his boat, and rode up and back with Chris D and Dave B, who were also making the trek for the first time this season. That gave me a bonus few hours of fishing when we stopped at South Bay on the way up to Ti Friday evening. We only fished the bay, and we all got bit a few times dragging various plastics across the top of the thinnest water chestnut nut growth, but none of us managed to hook up.
Anyway, we hit the hotel some time after 10:30, and then met my son at the ramp in Addison early Saturday morning. We all headed up toward the Button Bay/Rock Island area, hoping to do some sight fishing for smallies. View the entire post — Champlain — better late than even later.
